  • Examples of daily gratitude practices, even when it feels hard to get started.

Let’s dive in.

Let’s start with why gratitude is so powerful, especially during mid-life transitions.

When life throws challenges our way—whether it’s grief, a career change, or even a divorce—it’s easy to focus on what’s going wrong. We get stuck in a cycle of negative thinking, and that negativity can weigh us down emotionally, mentally, and even physically.

Gratitude interrupts that cycle. It shifts our focus away from what’s missing and toward what we still have. It doesn’t erase the pain or the challenges, but it helps us find moments of light in the darkness.

For me, gratitude has been a lifeline. During some of the toughest times in my life—like losing my son and son-in-law, or navigating the challenges of mid-life—I found that focusing on even the smallest blessings gave me the strength to keep going.

But let’s talk about what gratitude actually means.

Gratitude is more than just saying 'thank you.' It’s a deep sense of appreciation for the things, people, and moments that bring value to your life. And it’s not just about recognizing the big things—it’s also about noticing the small, often overlooked blessings.

Gratitude isn’t just something we feel; it’s also something we give. It’s about expressing appreciation to others, whether it’s through words, actions, or even a simple note. But it’s equally important to express gratitude to ourselves—to acknowledge our efforts, our growth, and the strength it takes to show up each day.

Now let’s talk about how we can practice gratitude.

Here are a few ways you can express gratitude to others:

  1. Say It: Take a moment to tell someone how much you appreciate them. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or even a coworker, those words can mean so much.
  2. Write It: Send a heartfelt note, card, or email. Writing down your gratitude makes it feel more intentional.
  3. Show It: Acts of kindness—like cooking a meal, giving a small gift, or helping someone out—are wonderful ways to express gratitude.

And don’t forget to show gratitude to yourself:

  1. Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small.
  2. Treat yourself with kindness and compassion, especially on tough days.
  3. Take time for self-care and activities that bring you joy.

When we practice gratitude regularly, it becomes a habit—and that habit can transform the way we see ourselves and the world.

One of the most effective ways to build gratitude into your life is through daily practice.

Here’s a simple way to get started:

  1. Write Down 3 Things: Every day, write down three things you’re grateful for. They can be as big as a meaningful relationship or as small as your morning coffee.
  2. Be Specific: Instead of saying, 'I’m grateful for my family,' try, 'I’m grateful for the funny conversation I had with my sister today.'
  3. Do It Consistently: At first, it might feel hard to come up with things to be grateful for—especially if you’re going through a tough time. But I promise, the more you practice, the easier it will become.

For example, during one of my darkest times, I started my gratitude practice by focusing on very small things, like the sunshine streaming through my window or the comforting sound of my dog’s footsteps. Over time, those small moments helped me find strength and hope.

To recap, gratitude is a powerful tool for healing and transformation. It helps us shift our focus, express appreciation, and find light even in the darkest moments.

Remember, gratitude isn’t about ignoring pain or pretending everything is perfect—it’s about finding beauty and meaning in the midst of life’s challenges.
