I know firsthand how challenging this can be. Today, we’re going to talk about the root of self-doubt in mid-life, how limiting beliefs play a major role in holding us back, and most importantly, how to challenge and overcome those beliefs so you can live a life that feels full and aligned with your true self.
I’ll be sharing examples of limiting beliefs many women, including me, struggle with, practical ways to shift those beliefs, and tips for building confidence as you step into your next chapter.

Let’s start by acknowledging the unique challenges women face in mid-life. For many of us, this is a time of significant transition. The kids may have left the house, we’re navigating changes in our relationships, or we’re even rethinking our careers or retirement plans.
With all of these changes, it’s natural to feel some self-doubt creeping in. You might ask yourself:
- Am I good enough?
- Is it too late for me to make a change?
- What do I even have to offer at this stage of life?
These questions stem from self-doubt, which often disguises itself as fear, uncertainty, or even shame. It’s important to remember that you’re not alone—self-doubt is something every woman experiences at some point. But here’s the good news: You can overcome it. It starts by understanding where these feelings come from and how they’re holding you back.
A big part of self-doubt is rooted in limiting beliefs—those negative thoughts and assumptions we’ve carried with us for years, often without even realizing it.
Limiting beliefs are those little lies we tell ourselves, like:
- I’m too old to start over.
- I’m not smart or skilled enough to pursue that dream.
- I’ve failed before, so I’ll probably fail again.
These thoughts can feel so real and convincing, but they’re not the truth. They’re stories we’ve picked up from past experiences, societal expectations, or even the voices of others who doubted us.
Here’s the thing: If you keep telling yourself these stories, they become self-fulfilling prophecies. But when you challenge them and replace them with positive, empowering beliefs, you create space for growth, confidence, and joy.
So how do we reverse these limiting beliefs? It starts with awareness. You have to identify the beliefs that are holding you back and replace them with new, positive ones.
Here are a few examples:
- Instead of saying I'm too old to start over, try saying: It’s never too late to pursue my dreams and create the life I want.
- Instead of saying I'm not smart enough, say: I am capable of learning and growing, no matter my age.
- Instead of I’ve failed before, so I’ll fail again, say: My past does not define my future. Every failure has taught me something valuable.
These positive statements might feel unnatural at first, but the more you practice them, the more they’ll become your new truth. Write them down, repeat them to yourself daily, and believe that you are worthy of success and happiness.
Now that we’ve talked about shifting your mindset by ridding ourselves of those nasty limited beliefs, let’s get into some practical steps to challenge self-doubt and move forward with confidence.
- Practice Self-Reflection:
Take time to journal about your fears, doubts, and dreams. Ask yourself: What’s really holding me back? Sometimes, just putting your thoughts on paper can bring clarity and perspective. If you have been following along on the podcast, you know I am big on journaling. - Take Small Steps:
Self-doubt often feels overwhelming because we focus on the big picture or the end result. Break your goals into small, manageable steps. Celebrate every little victory—it’s proof that you’re capable of moving forward. - Seek Support:
Don’t be afraid to reach out to friends, family, or a coach who can encourage you and hold you accountable. Sometimes, just having someone believe in you can make all the difference. I have an accountability partner that I meet with every week to keep me accountable and on the right path. - Focus on Your Strengths:
Instead of dwelling on what you think you lack, remind yourself of everything you’ve accomplished and all the qualities that make you unique. Write a list of your strengths and refer to it whenever self-doubt creeps in. - Be Patient with Yourself:
Overcoming self-doubt is a journey, not a quick fix. Give yourself grace and remember that every step forward is progress, no matter how small. Also, remember that every failure is simply a lesson learned and that’s not a bad thing at all.
When we let self-doubt take over, it can rob us of so much joy. Instead of enjoying this beautiful stage of life, we get stuck in fear, regret, and comparison. It sucks. No one wants to feel that way.
But here’s the truth: Mid-life is not a time to shrink back—it’s a time to expand, to dream, and to embrace everything that makes you unique. Don’t let self-doubt keep you from living fully.
Take those small steps, challenge those limiting beliefs, and trust that you are capable of achieving incredible things. You deserve to live a life that brings you joy and fulfillment."
Self-doubt is a normal part of mid-life, but it doesn’t have to define you. By challenging your limiting beliefs, replacing them with positive statements, and taking small, intentional steps forward, you can create a life filled with confidence and joy.
